Each search engine...
Each search engine is different, having different submission rules, subject matter, etc. The number of search engines that your site pertains to depends on your site, where you are located and what you sell or offer. (If you are a real estate site, for instance, your site may not be accepted on a medical oriented search engine, etc.) Other submission companies advertise they will submit your site to thousands of search engines, but they don't mention that you will probably be accepted by about 100 of them.
Each search engine has different policies and time frames for posting your submission on their site. Some submissions go on automaticly, some are reviewed. Of those reviewed, some have a backlog of submissions. Note that search engines normally need 4-12 weeks to index a website. The full impact of your submission onto over 100 search engines will probably be felt after a 2-3 months. You should notice an increase in your "hits" or "traffic", as more and more search engines put your submission up. If you do not already have a counter to track your daily hits, contact your Webmaster or server and they will tell you how to set one up.
